ALSTOM - Traction Bricks project (FR09)

Within IPCEI Hy2Tech, ALSTOM objective is to develop zero-emission innovative solutions to replace diesel-based rolling stocks in different segments (regional passenger trains and locomotives) on the European rail network. Eight ALSTOM sites are involved with activities covering three different projects with H2 traction bricks and H2 railway applications embedding bricks (locomotives shunting and freight). A central team based in the head office will ensure coordination of the program. Developments part of TF2 related to Traction Bricks will also be performed in close coordination with Alstom Ferroviaria Italy involved with the Project IT43 related to H2 regional train development.
Within the TF2, ALSTOM will develop H2 traction Bricks for railway applications, covering fuel cells, batteries, converters and storage systems. The main objectives are to develop solutions with performances going beyond the state of the art. Developments will be conducted through 2 distinctive phases. The first phase will define and standardize traction architectures regional needs (new build and retrofits) maximizing integration of standard available components from suppliers adapted to challenges of mass and volume reduction. In addition, greater integration of railway constraints will offer increased performance in terms of component reliability (reduced cost of ownership). The second phase will be dedicated to verticalization of the design and manufacture of H2 subsystems with greater integration of the main traction Bricks (Fuel Cell, batteries, storage and refuelling) by ALSTOM. Objective is to enhance performances and competitiveness of these solution and to increase potential synergies with non-rail sectors like maritime and road.
The project started in September 2021 and will be completed in 2027. The Traction Bricks project is led by the site of Tarbes regarding the fuel cells, batteries and converters activities. Site of Saint-Ouen will be in charge of storage and energy management activities.
