Hydrogen Booster (EE01):

The project “Hydrogen Booster” is executed by Skeleton Technologies OÜ. Skeleton Technologies is the European leader in high-power, fast-charging energy storage for AI data centers, grid, transportation, and industrial applications. Working with some of the largest companies in the world - from European automotive companies, industrial equipment OEMs to truck fleet operators and defense prime contractors, Skeleton’s products have successfully been in the field, decreasing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, improving power quality, and protecting infrastructure by lowering the power fluctuation, and empowering wider electrification to fight climate change.

The main objective the Hydrogen Booster project is to develop an auxiliary high-power battery designed to improve the dynamic response of Hydrogen Fuel Cell (H2FC) powertrains in vehicles for peak shaving and braking energy recuperation applications. The project outcome plays an integral role in facilitating wider implementation and cost reduction of hydrogen mobility. Implementing the Hydrogen Booster as auxiliary power supply will render fuel cell systems:

1) Less dependent on critical resources, such as cobalt, nickel and natural graphite and hence more sustainable

2) Less costly due to a substantially reduced cost of power (€/kW)

3) More reliable as the power stability is guaranteed by a true high-power energy storage component

4) More flexible in terms of application as the power density of the full system is increased by the Hydrogen Booster. Key collaborative partners in the project are companies BMW, TOMARK, Évolution Synergétique Automotive S.L. and Neumann & Esser.

The Hydrogen Booster will be located in Tallinn in Estonia. The project has started in July 2024. The Hydrogen Booster is expected to be put in continuous operation by mid-2028. This will also mark the start of mass production of the Hydrogen Booster technology.
