Daimler Truck AG is one of the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, with more than 35 development and production locations around the world and around 100,000 employees.
Daimler Truck generates in a typical business year over 40 Bill. € of revenue and sells over half a million trucks and buses worldwide.
Daimler Truck wants to reduce emphasis on internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrain and redirect the vast majority of R&D spending to ZEV technologies by 2025. For ZEV technology, the company is committed to both battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and hydrogen solutions.

Besides its focus on battery driven electric trucks, Daimler Truck intends to accelerate the development and deployment of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Trucks (FCETs). The high energy density of hydrogen, quick refuelling times, and the likely development of a hydrogen energy system in many markets means that Daimler Truck is convinced that FCEVs will play a key role in future commercial transportation. Backed by the Cellcentric GmbH Joint Venture with Volvo Group and with a clear technology roadmap, Daimler Truck is committed to bringing these vehicles to the market.

The overarching objectives of the project are:

  • The development and production of 100 innovative, zero-emission, long-haul heavy-duty fuel cell trucks.
  • Operation of the vehicles by commercial fleet operators for at least 4 years
  • Demonstration of the technical feasibility and practicality of LH2 vehicle and refuelling technology
  • Implementation of a comprehensive monitoring and analysis program to accompany the deployment and operation of LH2 vehicles
  • Active dissemination of project results and knowledge gained to interested actors, within relevant NDI agreements

The project has not yet officially started – we are still in the generation of all necessary documents and are hoping to get a final approval still in 2023. However and based on a preliminary allowance by the German Government in 1st half of 2022, Daimler Truck has started on its own risk with referring developments in order to keep the challenging timeline.
