Plastic Omnium - HPV development and industrialization (FR11)

Plastic Omnium is a major and global Automotive Tier 1 supplier. Plastic Omnium is a family-led independent group that operates globally, with 150 production plants in 25 countries and 43 R&D centers. Plastic Omnium operates in five main business areas: (i) exterior systems, (ii) fuel tanks and after-treatment (SCR) systems, (iii) assembly of modules, (iv) lightning technology and (v) hydrogen and fuel cell systems for the automotive industry. The Group is firmly committed to technology transformation and sustainable mobility.
As a leader in clean technologies, the Group develops innovative hydrogen solutions for emission-free electric mobility. The company has been involved in the research and development of hydrogen storage and fuel cell solutions for more than 10 years, supporting the development of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). Plastic Omnium's ambition is to consolidate its leadership position as a global supplier of H2 solutions for the mobility sector.
Main objectives of the project are:
- Development and optimization of gaseous H2 conformable storage solutions (Long & Thin tank system).
- Manifold development (pipe collector for supplying the hydrogen tank) to distribute hydrogen into the vessels.
- Refilling optimization in long and thin tanks.
- Re use of recycled Carbon Fibers
- Methodology development for monitoring the health of HPV tanks in vehicles.
- Optimization of the process to reach a high-volume production
Regarding conformable tanks (WP1) a vessel with L/D ratio > 8 and its associated technological bricks are under development. An assessment of the different technologies that could answer customers' needs in terms of health monitoring (WP2) has started. Finally, the best concepts to recycle carbon fibre (WP3) could be identified.
FID phase has not started yet, although several preparational activities targeting planning and consultation of authorities were achieved in the reporting period. It is expected that construction can start in 2023.
