WS3 – Hydrogen storage capacity
Workstream 3 addresses the crucial role of large-scale underground hydrogen storage in Europe’s emerging hydrogen economy. Reliable storage ensures flexibility, balances seasonal fluctuations, and secures supply for industrial consumers and energy systems. By deploying the first integrated storage facilities, WS3 creates a foundation for the long-term stability and scalability of hydrogen markets. These facilities will be directly connected to the European Hydrogen Backbone, linking production, transmission, and consumption. The activities considered in WS3 are expected to contribute towards the following overarching objectives:
- Deploy underground hydrogen storage facilities with an initial capacity of ~372 GWh
- Ensure flexibility and reliability of hydrogen supply for industries and grid integration
- Connect storage sites directly to the hydrogen transmission backbone
- Provide operational experience and standards for large-scale hydrogen storage in Europe
- Support the systemic integration of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen into the EU energy system
