WS3 – Onboard Storage Solutions for Mobility Applications
Workstream 3 focuses on research, development, and innovation concerning the next generation of onboard storage solutions for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) and hydrogen aircrafts. This includes improvements in durability, safety, geometric design, and weight reduction for hydrogen storage solutions. The development of these solutions is essential, as storage for applications like aviation requires specific criteria such as durability and robustness in rapidly changing environmental conditions.
The main objectives of Workstream 3 are the following:
• Substantial improvement of the durability of onboard storage solutions, including metallic and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) tanks and their components, to make them suitable for next-generation mobility and transport applications.
• Optimisation of the geometric design of onboard hydrogen storage solutions to maximise load, improve the volumetric index, enable interoperability, and ensure a safe mode of operation.
• Development of innovative solutions for the weight reduction of gaseous and Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) onboard storage solutions, aiming to improve the gravimetric index.
• Development of innovative production lines for onboard storage solutions, meeting all application-specific requirements concerning safety, durability, capacity, design, and materials.
