WS4 – Hydrogen import and port infrastructure
Workstream 4 focuses on establishing the gateway for hydrogen imports into Europe. It develops port infrastructure capable of handling renewable hydrogen transported from global partners, including through Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC). Starting with the Port of Rotterdam, WS4 ensures that hydrogen can be efficiently imported, stored, and integrated into the European Hydrogen Backbone. This workstream strengthens Europe’s energy security, reduces dependency on fossil fuel imports, and creates long-term capacity for global hydrogen trade. The activities considered in WS4 are expected to contribute towards the following overarching objectives:
- Build dedicated port facilities for hydrogen import and handling
- Enable imports via innovative carriers (e.g., LOHC) to support long-distance transport
- Integrate port infrastructure with the European Hydrogen Backbone
- Diversify Europe’s hydrogen supply sources, enhancing energy security
- Lay the foundation for global hydrogen trade routes aligned with EU climate goals
Under WS4 the following projects are taking place:
